Slang AI for Small Businesses: A Plain-English Look

Who this is for

Restaurants. That is the answer, and it is worth being plain about it. Slang AI is for the owner whose phone rings with 'are you open,' 'can I get a table for six at seven' and 'do you have anything gluten-free' while the host stand is three deep. It is not for service businesses or trades, and Slang does not pretend otherwise. We include it here because restaurant owners search for an AI receptionist too, and handing them a tool built for plumbers would be a disservice.

What happens when someone calls

Slang answers around the clock and handles the questions restaurants actually get: hours, location, menu, wait times. It takes reservations through OpenTable, SevenRooms, Yelp and Fishbowl, according to its pricing page. It can transfer a call to a manager when needed, per its public materials. There is no human backup, and it does not do the lead-qualifying work that a trades tool does, because a restaurant does not need it.

The reason a restaurant-specific tool matters is the rush. A general-purpose receptionist can answer a question; a restaurant tool is built to handle a burst of the same six questions at once during the dinner spike. Setting it up

Expect to load the things a restaurant's phone gets asked about: hours, menu, seating, parking, policies on large parties, and the reservation system you already use. Because the product is narrow on purpose, there should be less to decide than with a general tool. We have not walked through onboarding ourselves and will not describe steps we have not seen.

One thing worth doing before you commit: write down the ten questions your staff answer most often on the phone, and make sure each one is something you can teach the system. For most restaurants the list is short and repetitive, which is exactly why an AI handles it well. The calls that fall outside that list, a large-party inquiry with special requests, a complaint, a vendor, are the ones you want transferred to a person, so ask how the handoff to your manager works during service.

What it costs

We checked slang.ai/pricing on September 7, 2026. Slang prices per location, per month: the Core plan starts at $399 and Premium at $599, with an Enterprise tier at custom pricing. Both plans include reservation management, texting, call recordings and summaries. What the page does not publish is any limit on minutes or calls, or an overage rate, so ask what 'starting at' means for a restaurant your size and what happens on a packed Saturday. No free trial or setup fee is mentioned either way. It is the priciest entry point in our directory, which can make sense for a busy dining room and makes no sense for anyone else.

Where it falls short

• Not designed for service businesses or trades. If your calls are about booking a job at someone's house, it is the wrong tool.
• A narrow use case, which is the point, but it means little relevance outside hospitality.
• No human backup.
• $399 per location per month is the highest entry price in our directory, and no minute, call or overage figures are published.

Our take for owners

If you run a restaurant, this is the one page on this site where we will not steer you toward Torklio, because Torklio is built for a different kind of phone call. Slang is the fit. Check that the reservation platform you use is one of the four it lists, ask what the 'starting at' price means for your location, and try it during a real Friday night.
